How to View a Banned or Deleted Subreddit

Short answer: how to view deleted subreddits and banned ones depends on one thing, whether the content was public before the community went down. If people could read those posts while the subreddit was live, a lot of that text can still be found afterward. If the community was private from the start, or the posts vanished within seconds, there is nothing left to read.

So before you go hunting, work out which kind of gone you are dealing with.

Start reading it now: look up a username from that community on deletedby.com to pull the posts and comments it made there, or open a subreddit's own page to see how heavily it was moderated. No account needed.

Banned, private, or deleted: which one is it?

Reddit shows a different message for each, and the message tells you your odds.

• Banned by Reddit. The community page reads something like "This community has been banned." Admins took it down, usually for spam or rule breaking. The posts were public first, which is the good case.
• Set private or closed by its own mods. You see a "private community" gate or a "this community doesn't exist" page. If it was public before it closed, the same logic applies. If it was private from day one, its posts were never public.
• Deleted. The subreddit no longer resolves at all. Same question again: was it ever public?

The same test runs through all three: public content leaves traces, private content does not.

What you can still read from a banned subreddit

A ban does not erase the posts that already existed. It stops Reddit from listing them, but the text was out in the open while the place was active, and public text tends to stick around in records outside Reddit.

So a banned or deleted community is not a single locked door. It is thousands of individual posts and comments, most of which anyone could read at the time. You get at them one author at a time rather than by browsing the community as a whole.

How to view deleted subreddits through the people who posted there

This is the method that works, and it is how I would approach a community that no longer exists.

Every post and comment in that subreddit was written by someone. Those accounts still exist, and their histories still carry what they wrote, including the stuff that got removed. So instead of trying to open the dead community, you look up the people.

1. Note a few usernames you remember from the subreddit, or find them quoted in other threads that linked to it.
2. Open deletedby.com and enter a username, with or without the u/ prefix.
3. Read through their history. Posts and comments they made in the banned community show up alongside everything else, and ones a moderator or filter removed appear with their original text where a copy exists.

It is slower than scrolling a live subreddit, but it reaches content the community page will never show you again. Check the community's own page too

deletedby.com also has a page per subreddit at the subreddit section. It pulls a recent sample of a community's posts and comments and shows how active it is and how much of its content gets taken down, split between what moderators remove and what automated spam filters catch.

One honest caveat: that page leans on recent public activity, so a community that Reddit banned months ago will not have a fresh sample to draw from. Where it earns its keep is a subreddit that is still up but heavily moderated, where you want to know how much gets quietly removed before you ever see it. For a community that is already gone, the author-by-author route above is the one that delivers.

Deleted subreddit versus the deleted posts inside it

Two things sound alike here and get confused. A deleted subreddit is a whole community that came down. A [deleted] post is one item the author erased themselves. You can often recover posts a moderator or Reddit removed, because they were public and someone else took them down. Posts the author personally deleted are meant to be gone and usually stay gone. What you cannot get back

No method covers everything, so here is where the wall is:

• Communities that were private from the start. Their posts were never public, so nothing exists to read later.
• Content deleted seconds after going up, before any copy was made.
• Text an author deliberately erased, beyond the narrow browser-history and notification tricks that only work if you saw it minutes ago.

Everything comes back to the same test. Was it public, and did a copy exist before it came down?

You cannot reopen a banned or deleted subreddit as a whole, but you can often read a large share of what was inside it. The fastest path is to look up the usernames of people who posted there and read their histories, removed items and all. The community page will show you the ban notice. The people who filled that community still carry most of what it held.
